What the Exercise tab shows

The Exercise tab shows the movement your iPhone and Apple Watch already record. Bolus does not ask you to log anything here: it reads what Apple Health holds and lays it out alongside the rest of your week.

The Exercise tab, showing the week's moderate minutes, the intensity bands and the steps card
The week is measured in moderate minutes, with each workout counted by its intensity.

Choosing a week

Arrows either side of the date range move between weeks, so you can look back at any week you have had. The week shown is your plan week, the same one the Today card counts.

Movement, toward your week

The card at the top counts your week in moderate minutes against an aim of 150, and says how many sessions that came from and how much is left.

Underneath, your minutes are split into three bands:

  • Low — you could sing. A gentle walk, pottering, light housework. Good for you, and it steadies glucose after a meal. It just does not count toward the week.
  • Moderate — you can talk, but not sing. Brisk walking, cycling on the flat, gardening. One minute counts as one.
  • Vigorous — too breathless to chat. Running, a hill, a class you would call hard. One minute counts as two, so 75 minutes finishes the week on its own.

Tap a band to see what it means, or a session to see that workout.

Steps and active energy

Steps shows the week day by day, with today still counting, and roughly what a typical day looks like for you. Active energy shows the day’s kcal as recorded.

Neither has a target. The guidance Bolus follows is written in minutes of activity, not steps, so Bolus sets no step goal.

Heart and fitness

Where your Watch records them, this section shows your resting heart rate, heart rate variability and VO₂ max. They are shown as they arrive, with no target and no scoring. VO₂ max needs an outdoor walk or run with your Watch before it appears.

Where the aim comes from

150 moderate minutes a week, or 75 vigorous, comes from the UK Chief Medical Officers’ physical activity guidelines, the guidance the NHS points adults with diabetes towards. The link at the foot of the tab opens our fuller write-up. Every bit counts: a shortfall is somewhere to build from, not a failing.

Whether a particular level or type of activity is right for you, including your heart, your feet or the medication you take, is a question for your care team. Bolus shows what you did; it does not prescribe what you should do.

If the tab is empty

Either Apple Health is not connected yet, or there is nothing recorded for the week you are looking at. See connect Apple Health and exercise data is not showing.
